SFD SATURDAY
MORNING WEEKLY 98

What’s the best food scene in Miami or South Florida? That’s a real tough one. You’ve got the fish shacks, the Cuban sandwich spots, the high-end restaurants, the food trucks, the old-fashioned delis, and more high-end strip mall Italian food than anywhere on the planet. Florida has a huge population, and within a four-hour drive you can get to 25 million people — so not only is it a great place to retire for some, it’s also becoming the hot spot for global business.

I Need Some Watr…

What’s the best food scene in Miami or South Florida? That’s a real tough one. You’ve got the fish shacks, the Cuban sandwich spots, the high-end restaurants, the food trucks, the old-fashioned delis, and more high-end strip mall Italian food than anywhere on the planet. Florida has a huge population, and within a four-hour drive you can get to 25 million people — so not only is it a great place to retire for some, it’s also becoming the hot spot for global business.

But you’re not here for me to tell you about economics — you’re here for the food and my go-to spots. Here is one that I am always at during a trip to Florida: Watr at the 1 Hotel rooftop. If you’re not familiar with South Beach, the 1 Hotel has been there for years and was formerly called the Gansevoort, like the one in the Meatpacking District in NY. I’ve got a story about that rooftop as well that involves my T-shirt going off the roof, but that’s for another day. This is about the restaurant at the top of the 1 — Watr.

Watr is what I would call an Asian-inspired fusion restaurant with hints of what is popular now. Let me take you through my last Monday night there just before Basel.

I headed up to the roof and sat by the bar as I often do — Watr is my spot. I asked for a cocktail and had a spicy margarita. I opted to wait for the main menu until 6, since it’s limited between 4–6. I started with a nice roll — hamachi — and asked for some ponzu on the side instead of soy; I kind of wish I got both sauces. It’s not like me to order beer, but I grabbed a Sapporo (a short can). It was great — truthfully, I had two more that night, I don’t know what came over me — and it paired perfectly with the bartender’s recommendation of the tartare with bone marrow. I wasn’t expecting it to be so good — it was great! A few people joined me at the bar and we ended up having such a fun night full of laughs and conversations. You never know who you’re going to meet in Miami, especially during Basel. Back to the food: I had the pork buns — fried, not steamed. I think I’ll go back to the traditional steamed next time, but they were so, so well done. I finished my night off with some shishito peppers, which are always a favorite for my family.

The rooftop at the 1 has great outdoor restaurant seating. It even has a pool for the hotel guests; I suspect you can get a day pass there, but I’m not sure. Either way, you can head up there — you don’t need to be staying there — and have a really great meal at the bar, at the restaurant, or even by the pool. Watr is a massive win and is always great. I hope you can check it out one day.

TECH SPOTLIGHT

A Cold Email, a Beer, and a Big Win

Sometimes the best tech stories start with a bold idea… and a little courage from the fridge. That’s exactly how Clipbook — an AI platform that helps companies keep tabs on what the world is saying about them — scored a $3 million seed round led by none other than Mark Cuban.

Founder Adam Joseph hit send on a cold email after psyching himself up with a beer, expecting nothing. Instead, Cuban replied — with roughly 20 brutally skeptical questions (very on-brand). Adam answered every single one like a pro, even producing a custom media intelligence report for Cuban’s company, CostPlus Drugs. And it paid off. Big time.

Today, Clipbook is growing fast with over 200 customers, proving that AI-built-from-the-ground-up tools can stand out — even in a crowded space.

The takeaway? Whether you’re building AI tools, launching a startup, or just dreaming up the next big thing:

✨ Take the shot. Press send. You never know who might answer. ✨

REAL ESTATE SPOTLIGHT

1818 W 23rd St ~ $26,500,000

Here is a wow from what in my opinion is the best part of Miami...

157 Blackthorn Ave ~ $1,149,000

This home has such an easy, welcoming energy from the moment you step inside. The main floor opens up in a bright, airy flow that just makes everyday life feel a little simpler—cooking, hanging out, hosting friends, everything fits together naturally. There’s even a mudroom tucked toward the back, perfect for dropping shoes, backpacks, and winter layers without cluttering the heart of the house.

Upstairs, three comfortable bedrooms create a cozy retreat for winding down at the end of the day, each one filled with natural light. The lower level adds even more flexible space, ideal for movie nights, workouts, or hobbies, with its own bathroom and laundry area.

The 1.5-car garage is such a thoughtful bonus—room for the car plus space for storage or a little workshop setup, and the extra-wide driveway makes coming and going feel effortless.

Set in a neighbourhood that makes daily routines smoother—schools and transit close by, tree-lined streets, and a sense of community—it’s the kind of place where life falls into a comfortable rhythm. With so many smart updates already done, it’s a home that’s ready to be lived in and loved right away.

3 - 538 Muskoka Road ~ $199,800

Affordably make the move to Muskoka! Or invest for a profitable future!

This lot in Huntsville features R2 Zoning that allows for light commercial property or a multi-unit duplex. It's an investors/contractors dream with walking distance to a public school, the hospital, food and retail shopping, and within a 10-minute drive of several lakes. Here's a little secret: the owners are willing to sell the 4 bed, 2 bath home as a combination with the lot - if the offer is right. Live in the home with your family and then build the income property next door - or vice versa!

FRANKIE’S SONG OF THE WEEK

Art Basel week has me feeling this one!

I'm not a huge podcast person and 4 hours seems like a crazy amount of time to invest but I saw this recommendation by Miles Nadal on LinkedIn on Monday and decided to have a listen, it happened to coincide with my flight to Miami so, it worked.

100 WEEKS OF POSITIVE MESSAGES

Frankie did 100 days of positive messages 3 years ago. He wanted to center them around mental health and positivity. We will post them each week for 100 weeks.

47

I’ve skied at least 50 different mountains because of him. We DROVE many March breaks to Colorado from Toronto, just for that great snow.

Most nights Dad would grab my brother and I for 3 laps of High park on bikes and then 20 minutes on a secret jumping track.

When my brother said he couldn’t learn French, Dad told him he would learn a language in spite and is now fluent in Spanish. He made a deal with a Spaniard at work where he would drive him 45 mins each way if they would speak only Spanish.

My first driving lesson was on his lap at 8 and by 10 he was giving me his car keys to drive in the woods on my own with two friends. The day I turned 16 we drove 5 hours north to get my license, when I got back he gave me a set of keys and said once he gets home from work, that car was mine, he even let me put a bulldog sticker on the back so that I looked COOL.

He took up tennis with me and a wooden racket eventually becoming the hitting partner to one of the best players in the city.

When we came to Canada 40 years ago he was pissed off about the GMOs and food system here but was labeled crazy. I heard it every night that we were poisoning ourselves. No microwave!

Our windsurfing trips to cape hatteras, Cuba, lake simcoe, cabarete and Florida, wow !

You always told it as it was, you didn’t mind people feeling uncomfortable for the sake of the truth. I was always impressed by that. You taught us to take the side of the underdog and never believe the first thing we heard.

When the weekend came along I knew people were coming over to watch you tell jokes, dance, play the guitar, sing and party until the morning. When I was little I was under the table and when I got older I joined the action.

I can still remember so vividly Sunday mornings from your bedroom. “Frankie! Get me the Alkaseltzer”

When I got a call saying that someone saw you walking up the Humber River, I knew it was you training your legs.

I know how hard my thing was on you, I know how hard it hit you, I know we share this damn thing where we think too fast and too much. But you know what Dad ? It doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with us.

I know, I still have to take up Bridge.”

🧠A Weekly Dose of Psychology You Didn’t Know You Needed 🧠

Hi everyone! I’m Maya, I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and Psychology (basically, I can analyze both a crime scene and your overly complicated coffee order). I’m also an incoming Master of Arts candidate in Counselling Psychology, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how the human brain works, and why it sometimes does the exact opposite of what we want it to do.

It’s officially that time of year when one whiff of gingerbread or the opening notes of a holiday song can send us straight back to childhood.

Psych Fact #22: Holiday nostalgia boosts emotional well-being and strengthens our sense of identity.

Our brain stores memories alongside sensory details — especially smell and music, which connect directly to the regions responsible for emotion and memory. That’s why certain traditions make us feel instantly safe, warm, and grounded.

Nostalgia doesn’t just remind us of the past — it actually helps our present by:
• increasing feelings of social connectedness
• boosting optimism and self-esteem
• reducing stress and loneliness

Even when the memories are bittersweet, reflecting on them can provide a sense of continuity — a reminder that joy has existed before and will exist again.

So as the holidays roll in, let yourself enjoy the tiny things: the taste of a favorite treat, the glow of lights, the songs you forgot you loved. Your brain is using those moments to recharge and reconnect.

Until next time,
Maya 🧠✨

CHRIS’ CORNER

Top 5 Must-See Games in December 2025

This week’s Chris’ Corner is going to be a little bit less commentary and a little more quick hits since I’ve got a bit of a time crunch.

Rather than go on and on about one sport or one team or one event, here’s a Top 5 list of games that are must-watch this month (December 2025).

1. The MLS Cup Final (Saturday, December 5 at 2:30 p.m. Apple TV and TSN). Inter Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps for the biggest prize. Neither club has won the MLS Cup before. This match has everything you could want: An American club vs. a Canadian Club; aging superstars like Lionel Messi, Thomas Müller, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets; young stars like Benjamin Cremaschi, Noah Allen, Ralph Priso, and Ali Ahmed; and plenty of celebrity power in the boardrooms and in the stands.

2. Juventus vs. AS Roma (Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2:45 p.m. on FuboTV Canada). Two historic Serie A clubs that have a bit of hate for each other and are battling for a Top 4 finish this season. Canadian superstar Jonathan David stars for Juventus. Bryan Cristante has dual Italian-Canadian citizenship through his father (his dad was born in Canada, Bryan is born in Italia). It’s a must-watch on many levels, and hits the Can-Con button as well.

3. NBA Christmas Day (well, four of the five games – various channels). Okay, I’m stretching a bit by including a slate of games in one spot. However, who doesn’t love NBA Christmas Day? It’s literally the turning point of the season where even casuals start to really pay attention to what’s up. The only mid game on the calendar is fittingly the first one (Cleveland-New York). The rest are sure to be wonderful displays of skill, intensity, and star power: San Antonio at OKC, Dallas at Golden State, Houston at the Lakers, and finally Minnesota at Denver.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens (Sunday, December 7 at 1 p.m. DAZN Canada, potentially other networks). Must-win for the AFC North rivals as the winner will have the inside track on the division title and automatic playoff berth. This is the first of two meetings between the teams, which sport identical 6-6 records. They also play on the final day of the regular season, which could either be an elimination game or mean nothing at all. Both teams are coming off losses, with the Ravens in better shape overall as they have recovered from a 1-5 start to the season. On the flip side, the Steelers started the season 4-1.

5. Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots (Sunday, December 14 at 1 p.m. DAZN Canada, potentially other networks). As long as they win this weekend, this will be a must-win for Buffalo to have any chance at winning the AFC East Division title. The

Pats (10-2) have already beaten the Bills (8-4) once this season and have a bye week ahead of their second match-up. It will also be a fantastic quarterback battle between arguably the NFL’s top player in Bills QB Josh Allen and the second-year superstar Pats QB Drake Maye. Definitely the definition of must-see TV.

Honourable Mention: The Toronto Raptors hosting the New York Knicks in the quarterfinals of the NBA Cup on Tuesday, December 9 at 8:30 p.m. (Sportsnet Ontario).

That’s what I’ve got for this week! Hope this helps guide some sports viewing this month.

Ciao for Now!
