FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

Needed a change up from the usual Hazelton One resto... So, I headed to a Toronto institution, the Royal York Hotel.

I use the path frequently; it's a part of Toronto that even many Torontonians don't know exists. It's like an underground mall that connects all of the office towers, hotels and some residential towers in downtown Toronto.

I often use it for my walks during cold days, or I head there Tuesdays and Thursdays for a walk and some networking when I drive my wife to work - she's a Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office kind of girl.

Back to the food and the Royal York.

It's great... It's a beautiful building with a crowd you don't see uptown and Reign (the restaurant) is awesome.

I met Snow (the rapper), Rasta, and Ali there last week for a bite. We started with a coffee in the AM at the gorgeous coffee bar in the middle of the hotel.

We then headed to Reign. During coffee we called Mark Walhberg on FaceTime and he committed to me that he would make the next UntuckedGolf tourney so hey, next year could be even better than this year ;) - let's hope his schedule is open. :) @George P - let's do better next year! @camh

Reign has a really nice menu, I had the arctic char perfectly cooked on a bed of veggies, Rasta had the salmon which he often does, and Ali had a nice steak on a bun with some fries. Snow took a little something to go.

The food was fantastic; we ran into several people we knew and even got an invite to a BIG Christmas party that day. I'd say that I may be doing a few more of these lobby bars in some of the next reviews. I've forgotten how much fun and good they can be.

Have a great week and happy holidays 🤦‍♀️ is it appropriate to start saying that already?

TECH SPOTLIGHT

Is Wall Street Losing Its AI Sparkle?

It’s been a bumpy week for tech stocks, and some investors might be feeling a little less starry-eyed about artificial intelligence. The Nasdaq Composite took a 3% tumble—its worst week since April’s tariff news—leaving companies like Palantir, Oracle, and Nvidia wincing at drops of 11%, 9%, and 7%, respectively. Even AI heavyweights Meta and Microsoft, who are still pouring cash into the AI dream, saw dips of around 4%.

“Valuations are stretched,” says Jack Ablin of Cresset Capital. In other words, the market’s expectations are sky-high, so even good news barely moves the needle—while any hint of bad news feels like a lightning strike.

Some broader economic clouds aren’t helping either: government shutdown drama, dips in consumer confidence, and ongoing layoffs all add extra weight. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones, a little less tech-obsessed, managed gentler falls of 1.6% and 1.2%.

So, is this a temporary wobble or a sign Wall Street’s honeymoon with AI is cooling? Either way, one thing’s for sure: AI might be smart, but the stock market certainly keeps us on our toes.

Do you have a hard time with that?

Some people love to blame a parent, a friend, an ex, or a colleague for everything.

Who hasn’t been forgotten, cheated on, mistreated, or lied to?

When people go to bed, they think about themselves, their families, and their lives and don’t sit there hoping it goes exactly the way YOU have planned it in your mind.

The best thing you can do is let people know what you are hoping for, your expectations, and asking for what you want.

People are not mind readers and have no idea how urgent or important things are to you.

That is just life.

If you sit there mistrusting or blaming everyone you will be angry and defensive from the beginning, it’s not good for your brain.

If you go into every situation thinking someone is going to screw you then that is likely what will happen.

Studies have shown that anger, jealousy, and negative thinking can shut down parts of the brain, cause heart attacks, strokes, and even cancers.

Your best bet when it comes to that feeling of mistrust is to become a trustworthy person yourself.

Do what you say you will.

It is so easy to say that someone didn’t do something for you. Well, what have you done for them?

In order to get love, you gotta give love.

That must be true, right?

Trust your gut and do things from the goodness of your heart without hoping for anything in return.”

🧠A Weekly Dose of Psychology You Didn’t Know You Needed 🧠

Hi everyone! I’m Maya, I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and Psychology (basically, I can analyze both a crime scene and your overly complicated coffee order). I’m also an incoming Master of Arts candidate in Counselling Psychology, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how the human brain works, and why it sometimes does the exact opposite of what we want it to do.

This week, I want to build off an idea that came from the boss man (AKA SFD) - trust and expectations. We all know the frustration of feeling let down when someone doesn’t meet our hopes — but your brain reacts in more dramatic ways than you might think.

Psych Fact #19: Expecting the worst from others can literally make you less able to reason clearly.

Research in social psychology shows that when you enter interactions with mistrust or hostility, your brain’s prefrontal cortex — the area responsible for logic, problem-solving, and emotional regulation — can temporarily “shut down.” Meanwhile, the amygdala, the part that drives fear and anger, becomes more active. That combination can make you overreact, misinterpret intentions, or hold grudges more easily.

Here’s the interesting twist: practicing trust and reciprocity — even small gestures like keeping promises, being reliable, or giving help without expecting anything back — can train your brain to respond more calmly in uncertain situations. Essentially, being trustworthy encourages others to be trustworthy, and it helps keep your own brain in a healthier state.

So instead of stewing over what others might do, focus on what you can do. Make your intentions clear, act with integrity, and let your brain reap the benefits of calm, clear thinking.

Until next time,
Maya 🧠✨

Love From a Valentine

I recognized the name from work but had no idea I was on the way to their home.  It was a warm grey day, tiny raindrops sprinkled on the windshield of the taxi. I pulled up outside what I thought was an event space.   There was a valet and a few other people directing me in.  Once I saw all the flowers and a poster in the foyer, I knew I was in the right place and pulled out my phone for picture time.

The turn of a corner revealed a beautiful winding staircase on one side and an even more stunning library on the other.  Stephanie Valentine was seated at a desk signing copies of her colorful hard-covered book Love What’s On Your Plate. Though there were influencers and her publishing team bustling about, it felt like an intimate gathering of friends, family and neighbors.

After taking in the library – with its grand windows, stylish couches and old family photographs, I made my way into the living room.  The living room was full of deliciously inspired art.  The people standing, sitting and sipping seemed chic yet comfortable.  Immediately I felt self-conscious, like a little fluffy animal that found its way in from the fanciful gardens in the backyard.  I was going straight to work after the launch – hair, frizzy, wearing ill-fitting black clothing from head to toe and too much blush.

But before anxious thoughts could take on much momentum I noticed –yes- the food.  The first thing I reached for was chocolate avocado mousse.  It was thick and creamy but not overly sweet – perfect to soothe a slight hangover.  Next up were cheddar biscuits, pasta and a mushroom black bean burger.  Ironically, as my hunger subsided I found myself in the dining room.  They had set up an auction fundraiser with a foodbank but I was much too enchanted by the chandelier to read through each item.  Just as I captured the perfect selfie mirror video (chandelier in background of course), I noticed it was time to leave.

In the library, they were starting to pack up and offered me a Love What’s On Your Plate tote (book included!).  I was excited to try some healthier recipes and thought maybe it was a sign to (actually) use my stove.  There was even an engraved cutting board and wooden spoon to get me started.  I’m sure I had a pot or pan somewhere in my teeny-tiny kitchenette.

Heading outside, the air was still warm and damp.  Those of us Yorkville neighborhood bound shared a cab this time around.  On the way back, we talked about the food, the home and the family.  I thought about the recipes from my childhood, unsure if I still had them.  But for now - I had Stephanie’s, a full tummy and my plate - soon to be full too!

CHRIS’ CORNER

A Title in Toronto?

Okay, so Canada’s team struck out – er, make that grounded out into a double play – in one of the best World Series of all time.

But Toronto sports fans still have one team left vying for their league championship: AFC Toronto.

The professional women’s soccer team is set to take on Vancouver in the first ever Northern Super League (NSL) final today (Saturday, September 15) at BMO Field.

In fact, it’s a day all of Canada can celebrate as the inaugural season of the first professional women’s league in the nation ends with a home game for its biggest city.

Though AFC Toronto has played most of its home games at York Lions Stadium, they did have two solid matches at BMO this season. Their first ever match against Montreal in the spring and a summer tilt against this same Vancouver team during the CNE.

The home team lost both those matches 1-0. But on both occasions, AFC Toronto was the better team. They’re hoping it’s a third time’s the charm situation in the final.

And this team has shown the ability to ramp up when they need to.

After all, AFC Toronto rebounded from a slow start to the season and ran away with the Supporters Shield, given for first place in the regular season, then took down Montreal in the semi-finals with a two-leg aggregate score of 6-1.

The last time BMO Field hosted a Toronto team in a soccer final TFC took down Seattle 2-0 to win their first, and so far, only, MLS Cup way back in 2017. They lost in penalties the year before in the same match at the same field, but let’s focus on the positives.

This time around it’s the women on the pitch and the whole city should be supporting AFC as they try to finish a wonderful season with a second trophy.
