SFD SATURDAY
MORNING WEEKLY 85

Freshly made burritos carnitas (slow-roasted pork)? Flautas de Pollo? Margaritas with upper-shelf tequila? Si! Si! Más, por favor!

TIFF IS HERE!

And Super Frankie is Everywhere...

Wednesday night was an incredible gala highlighting Canada’s most famous celebrity photographer, George Pimentel. The Toronto Star’s Jordan Bitove opened the night, celebrating 50 years of TIFF, while so many of George’s iconic photos adorned the walls. The evening was topped off with George’s heartfelt speech, where he talked about being a young man capturing his first photo of Robert De Niro — without a badge, without credentials, and somehow hitting the shot perfectly. What a great night! George is truly our Toronto celebrity, and I honestly look forward to a documentary on him one day. I’m sure there must be one out there already.

On the actual first night of TIFF, I had the pleasure of watching the opening-night movie “I Like Me,” a documentary celebrating the life of John Candy. “Johnny Toronto” — as they called him — worked tirelessly, drank plenty, and lived in a body infused with generosity for everyone around him. Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, SCTV… the list went on and on.

The documentary featured many of his friends and family, but above all, it shined a light on his brilliant smile and the beloved “happy uncle” energy that people adored — which, apparently, was just as true in real life. It also documented his struggles with anxiety toward the end of his life, and there wasn’t a dry eye in Roy Thomson Hall.

The night opened with an inspiring speech by Mark Carney 🇨🇦 and wrapped up with producers Ryan Reynolds and the Candy family chatting about the film. Truly, what a night!

Let’s just say Frankie may have already seen a few too many after-parties 🤦‍♀️

Have a great weekend, everyone!

FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

With Super Frankie super busy this week getting ready for the Untucked Celebrity Golf Tournament and with several important TIFF events taking place, Chris O is helping out with this week’s restaurant review . . .

Freshly made burritos carnitas (slow-roasted pork)? Flautas de Pollo? Margaritas with upper-shelf tequila?

Si! Si! Más, por favor! It’s the reason myself, my amazing wife, and our friends in the know keep going back to El Pueblito for more.

And this is coming from individuals who have enjoyed on multiple occasions the flavourful brilliance of homemade Mexican cuisine in that beautiful country.

Marlenne Rickard, who owns the restaurant with husband Mike, is from Mexico, which is why the food is so good. Only people who have been brought up with a particular cuisine can really understand how to make it right.

There are plenty of scrumptious options on the menu, including vegetarian and vegan selections, but for myself, a great meal at El Pueblito begins with a margarita (make sure to ask to upgrade to a higher end brand of your choice); followed by sharing Guacamole con Totopos; then I usually have a burrito (you can’t go wrong with any of the options, as I’ve tried them all)!

We’ve also tried other dishes, and definitely recommend both the Flautas de Pollo and Tacos, but the aforementioned is my routine.

While the yummy in my tummy dishes keep the local establishment on our go-to list, the service and atmosphere are fantastic as well.

Perfect for a date, gathering with friends, or bringing the family, the restaurant features a menu and aura that all can enjoy.

The colourfully curated décor offers plenty of reminders to remember those days and nights spent touring Mexican hot spots – and not as well-known joints – and those lovely days by the ocean.

So, if you’re looking for a true taste of Mexico, head to El Pueblito at 155 Manitoba Street in Bracebridge for a great experience.

🚀Meet the 20-Somethings Betting $5M on Vision AI

What were you doing at 20? Probably not raising $5 million to revolutionize how companies understand online behavior — but that’s exactly what Amogh Chaturvedi and his co-founders, Skyler Ji and Chirag Kawediya, are doing with their new startup, Human Behavior.

After selling their first startup (at 19!), the trio dove headfirst into Y Combinator, pivoted from e-commerce accounting to AI-powered analytics, and walked away with a seed round backed by heavy hitters like General Catalyst and Paul Graham. Not bad for a couple of college dropouts with a dream.

So what’s the big deal? Instead of painstakingly setting up endless click trackers and tags, Human Behavior uses vision AI to “watch” how people actually use websites and apps. Think Netflix bingeing… but for user sessions. The result? Companies get instant insights about what’s working, what’s broken, and why customers stick around (or don’t).

The founders call session replays an “untapped goldmine,” and they’re on a mission to make Human Behavior the Datadog of session analytics. For now, they’re helping fast-growing startups squash bugs and understand users better — but with $5M in the bank, you can bet this is just the beginning.

Who knew AI could be this… observant? 👀

WORD OF THE WEEK

Abeyance

What It Means

Abeyance is a formal word that is almost always used in the phrase “in abeyance” to describe something in a temporary state of inactivity—that is, something in a state of suspension.

FRANKIE’S SONG OF THE WEEK

I'm loving this track lately.

100 WEEKS OF POSITIVE MESSAGES

Frankie did 100 days of positive messages 3 years ago. He wanted to center them around mental health and positivity. We will post them each week for 100 weeks.

#36

If you believe the world is evil and against you then it will be, if you believe the world is good and people are good then it will be.

The truth is we all want the same things. We ALL want to be happy, smart, funny, good at sports, eat well, wealthy, drive nice things, artistic, confident, interesting, good looking and have plenty of friends.

EVERYONE wants the same things but it gets screwed up somewhere along the way.

That person that you think is mad at you or did you some harm is just looking out for themselves or their families and didn’t set out to hurt YOU. They were just protecting themselves.

If you continue to tell your kids that there is a boogieman everywhere then they will find that boogieman.

If you are sitting around scared of the world then I encourage you to turn off the news for a few weeks and stop reading the paper.

Take a look at what is actually happening around you and you will likely see a lot of good people and great deeds happening.

The news is meant to scare you, that is how they sell papers, tv commercials, products and medicines. The global crime and poverty rates are actually decreasing, that is the real truth.

Stop scaring your kids, teach them to be polite to homeless people, teach them to say thank you and teach them to always see the other side of the situation.

I have walked with people that describe their generational trauma and blame their parents for their faults. This may be true with habits that are passed down, no question.

But, have you ever noticed families with 3 or 4 siblings that are all different ? We can’t blame our parents for everything.

YOU are the only one who can fix your brain and your thoughts. No magic therapist or pill will do this for you. Your brain has the power to change but it is a muscle and it takes work.

It is not about blocking a negative thought from coming in, because they will come, it is about twisting it and turning it into a positive one. Making the negative thought a positive one is the trick. Make it a habit to flip your thoughts.

Don’t let someone else’s negative thinking ruin your day.

Have fun every day.

🧠A Weekly Dose of Psychology You Didn’t Know You Needed 🧠

Hi everyone! I’m Maya, I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and Psychology (basically, I can analyze both a crime scene and your overly complicated coffee order). I’m also an incoming Master of Arts candidate in Counselling Psychology, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how the human brain works, and why it sometimes does the exact opposite of what we want it to do.

🧠 Psych Fact #10: Your brain can literally “catch” other people’s emotions, and faster than you think.

Ever walked into a room and instantly felt tense, even before anyone said a word? That’s thanks to emotional contagion, the process where we unconsciously “mirror” other people’s moods.

Here’s the wild part: studies show this happens in milliseconds. Your brain automatically mimics tiny facial expressions, vocal tones, and even body language around you, and in doing so, it subtly shifts your own emotional state.

It’s why one grumpy coworker can ruin the vibe of a whole meeting, and why surrounding yourself with positive, upbeat people can genuinely improve your mood and even lower stress.

So next time you feel off for “no reason,” it might just be your brain borrowing someone else’s feelings without asking first.

Your emotions are contagious, choose your company wisely.

Until next time,
Maya 🧠✨

UPCOMING SPORTS EVENTS

CHRIS’ CORNER

‘Tis The Season For Pulling Your Hair Out

To all my fellow competitive sports parents out there: You are not alone.

We feel your pain and understand the exhaustive nature of the September calendar.

The late-night games out of town on a school night in the first few days of being back; the practices and tryouts for different teams and different sports; the cross over between the end of season in your child’s summer sport and the beginning of the season for their fall or winter sport; the list can go on and on.

Oh yeah, and then you throw in banquets and special events and tournaments, and it’s enough to pull your hair out when looking at a calendar with absolutely ZERO downtime.

At our house, we’ve also thrown in a family reunion event, golf gatherings, and other items to really make the time/date/travel jigsaw puzzle an interesting endeavour – we really are gluttons for punishment (hehehe).

The most nonsensical part of it all is I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love being this busy, I love watching my kids practice and play their games, and I love getting together with family and friends.

The only part that really can get frustrating is being separated so much throughout the month (and sometimes multiple months) due to different schedules and locations of practices and games.

It’s always nicer to be able to do things as a family and support each child together – hearing siblings cheer one another on is music to my ears.

I’m not going to pretend anything we do in our home will work well for your home calendar because the things that work for us, might not work for you.

However, one thing I’ve noticed that does help me personally (and our family as a whole) is we have an old school paper and cardboard giant calendar that we write everything down and hang up in a communal space on for everyone to use as a reference.

Then, I also add it to my digital calendars and set several reminders to ensure that I’m on top of things.

It makes things feel more manageable when everyone is on the same page. And when it’s during the busiest month of the year, it becomes and invaluable asset.

Realistically, there are only two months a year like this: September and June. The start and end of the school year. The changing of seasons. The ramping up of time commitments to all manner of unforeseen to dos.

Although it feels so overwhelming and, at times, unmanageable, you will get through it and feel good about the results on the other side of the madness.

That’s it for me! Ciao for Now!
