FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

I was most recently asked what the most iconic party restaurant in Paris is. I think everyone would agree that it's Matignon.

Matignon is the spot at the end of the Champs-Élysées where everyone hangs out. You can have a great lunch there, a great dinner, and then the BIG night out in a nightclub—never leaving Matignon—and that is what most people are hoping for when they hit Paris. It's an institution and probably put the supper club style on the map.

I had the pleasure of meeting my buddy Noam there for lunch this week. He had a delightful soup/salad, and I had my usual—steak tartare. We shared some sparkling water and watched some fabulously dressed Middle Eastern people pop in, dropped off by Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. Yep. That's the kind of spot it is.

The last time I was in Paris, three months ago with a few buddies, we did the dinner up top, shared some great plates (including tartare), and headed downstairs for an awesome party until the wee hours. I took off a little early (I'm known for my Houdini exit 🤦‍♀️ over the years), but the fellas kept it going.

If you need a great night out or a very sexy lunch spot, you can always count on Matignon.

TECH SPOTLIGHT

Zoom goals: The iPhone 17 Pro might be getting a serious camera upgrade

If the latest rumors are true, Apple might be giving your next phone the kind of camera upgrade that makes your DSLR jealous. A tipster, who claims to be working on an iPhone 17 Pro commercial, has shared some exciting details that have us reaching for our tripods.

One of the biggest changes could be an upgrade to 8x optical zoom. That’s a big step up from the iPhone 16 Pro’s 5x zoom and means you could capture faraway subjects with much more clarity. The new lens might also be movable, allowing for smooth, continuous zoom without sacrificing quality.

The tipster also mentioned a brand new pro-level camera app that’s reportedly in the works. It could either be a next-gen version of Final Cut Camera or a fresh app designed to compete with favorites like Halide and Filmic Pro. If you’re into mobile photography or video, this might be one of the most exciting changes yet.

There’s also talk of a second Camera Control button, this time placed at the top edge of the phone. It would give users quicker access to camera settings, which could be a nice bonus for those who want more control without digging through menus.

Design-wise, the rumor about a copper-orange color is still going strong, along with a possible repositioning of the Apple logo to the center of the back panel. It’s a small detail, but one that could give the phone a refreshed look.

Of course, none of this is confirmed. Physical changes like buttons are usually leaked by case manufacturers, so this one might be more wishful thinking than reality. The software rumors, though, seem a bit more likely to pan out.

Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 17 lineup in September. Until then, we’ll be keeping our camera apps open and our ears to the ground.

REAL ESTATE SPOTLIGHT

8302 Poplar Side Road ~ $1,525,000

I'm a big Fan of Collingwood. I always have been. You get the water and the skiing. This is a great one and a good price. In my opinion the only thing it lacks is a pool, but they are not for everyone so a great double sized spa and bam, you've got a beautiful ski shack.

REMINDER

BTW, at the bottom of this NL is our invite to the www.untuckedgolf.com on Sept 15th. Frankie along with George Pimentel (Canada’s N#1 photographer) are hosting their first tourney to support CamH. George is the king of galas so this little tourney is bound to have some tricks up its sleeve. Now, attached below are a few great photos of his. Check them out and enjoy 😉.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Facile

What It Means

Facile is a formal adjective that is used disapprovingly to describe something that is too simple, or that doesn’t show enough thought or effort. Facile can also be used for something done or achieved in a way that is considered too easy or that is easily accomplished or attained. It is sometimes used approvingly, however, for someone or something that works, moves, or performs well and very easily.

FRANKIE’S SONG OF THE WEEK

I most recently met Snow at One restaurant in Toronto. He was seated with my buddy Teddy, and we sang a couple hits together. I remember singing "Lady with a red dress" over and over while cruising in Wasaga Beach with the Belli brothers when we were in our teens. What I would do to have him at our golf tourney 🫵

#31

Having things to look forward to is like having goals.

I think writing down goals and things you want to achieve is very important.

I have a little black journal I take everywhere. I’ve had it for 25 years and I write in it every couple days.

It has the things I want to achieve that year, that month and that week.

I include optimal weight, places I want to see, business/life goals on the left side and on the right I have the deals we want to get.
I open it Monday and scratch things off during the week and on Friday, I look at the things I haven’t done and rewrite them for the following week.

We have a little map in the basement that has little pins in it (Inspired by Jeff Sutton) and we are trying to knock off as many cities and countries as we can.

Travel is one of the best ways to learn how to adapt, to sort out little complicated situations with currencies, to respect new cultures and learn about yourself.

Similar to meditation (which I can’t do), skiing and even running, travel forces you to leave your day to day thoughts, make your brain work and adjust to new cultures.

I am seldom jealous but when someone tells me about somewhere they have travelled and I can’t picture it in my head, I get jealous.

Currently I have the Great Wall, Antarctica and Sri Lanka on my list.

Travelling is good for the mind.

What is next on your travel bucket list?

🧠A Weekly Dose of Psychology You Didn’t Know You Needed 🧠

Hi everyone! I’m Maya — I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and Psychology (basically, I can analyze both a crime scene and your overly complicated coffee order). I’m also an incoming Master of Arts candidate in Counselling Psychology, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how the human brain works — and why it sometimes does the exact opposite of what we want it to do.

🧠 Psych Fact #5: Your brain can trick itself into thinking you’re being watched — even by a picture of eyes.

Studies have shown that when people are subtly exposed to images of eyes, even fake ones (like eyes on a poster or computer screen), they’re more likely to behave in socially acceptable ways — like donating more to an honesty box or cleaning up after themselves.

Why? Because your brain has evolved to be hyper-sensitive to social judgment. Even a suggestion of someone watching can trigger your internal “act normal” response — even if you know it’s just a stock photo of eyeballs.

So yes, technically, the office kitchen would stay cleaner if someone taped a picture of eyes above the sink. Psychology says so.

Until next time,
Maya 🧠✨

Canada Tennis Needs a No. 1 (or at least a Top 5)

In case you missed it, the Canadian Open tennis championship is taking place this week in Toronto (men) and Montreal (women).

At the time of this writing on Thursday morning, already the biggest Canadian stars had been eliminated.

And worse yet, they had both been having pretty good seasons heading into their home tourney.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov were both eliminated in the round-of-64 while Leylah Annie Fernandez, who was fresh off winning the DC Open title, was knocked out one round earlier.

In fact, most Canadian tennis players were already eliminated prior to the round-of-32.

Bianca Andreescu fell early, as did Eugenie Bouchard, who also is now retired after playing her last match in her hometown.

Only Burlington’s Victoria Mboko, who played Thursday night, and Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo, who played Friday, were remaining. I hope they were able to win and keep going to give our nation something to cheer about.

Let’s now look at Italian tennis, specifically on the men’s side as not too many of their women entered this year’s Canadian Open (though I was sad to see Jasmine Paolini fall in three tough sets early on).

World Number-1 Jannik Sinner didn’t even come to Canada this year after a grueling stretch of finals and titles, as he rests up to make a run at yet another Grand Slam in New York in a few weeks. It’s understandable and he did win the title in 2023.

What’s more interesting when looking at Italian men’s tennis is that they had four of their original six entrees still standing as of the round-of-32.

Third-seeded (for this tournament) Lorenzo Musetti, No. 13 Flavio Cobolli, No. 28 Lorenzo Sonego, and No. 32 Matteo Arnaldi.

This isn’t accidental. Not only did Italian tennis put a lot of funding into their programs, but when a nation has a World Number 1 in their ranks, it automatically boosts the level of play from everyone else as they strive to keep up with their country man or woman.

Oh, and Italia is the reigning Davis Cup Champions, so basically tennis’ World Champs.

This happened with Serbia when Novak Djokovic was at his peak, with Spain consistently under Rafa Nadal and now Carlos Alcaraz, and with Switzerland thanks to Roger Federer.

Even in the United States, when we were growing up, they were a force with Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, and more.

Milos Raonic took a huge leap and took tennis by storm in 2016 when he was ranked No. 3 in the world. But unfortunate and untimely injuries derailed his career. It’s long past time for another Canadian player to crack the top 5 – or even top 10.

To be fair, the Canadians won the 2022 Davis Cup with a solid team performing at their highest level at just the right time. However, since then, it’s been a mixed bag of results on all stages.

Auger-Aliassime is still young enough and skilled enough to hit those heights. Or maybe it’s someone coming down the pipeline.

Either way, if Canada tennis wants to really be a force in every tournament, not just on occasion, we need one of our current stars to take their game to the next level.

That’s it for me! Ciao for Now!
