SFD SATURDAY
MORNING WEEKLY 78

I had to pick my daughter up last weekend in Huntsville (Huntsville is 3+ hours north of Toronto) from a hockey camp. It was an early Saturday morning pick-up. I thought to myself, why don't I head up there a night early and have a night up in cottage country?

FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

I had to pick my daughter up last weekend in Huntsville (Huntsville is 3+ hours north of Toronto) from a hockey camp. It was an early Saturday morning pick-up. I thought to myself, why don't I head up there a night early and have a night up in cottage country?

Canada has a great cottage scene in the summer. After hinting to a few friends that I was heading up there (hoping for a bunkie invite) with no bites 😉, I convinced a buddy to join me for the ride and said we'd find something when we got there.

Driving along Eglinton before hitting the highway, I spotted the reopened RANDY’s Patties. Ohhhhh baby! Did I head in there and grab 4 patties, 2 Tings, and two waters (there were two of us)? Yes, I did. And was I happy? VERY! Let's just say Randy's hasn't missed a beat. In fact, I think their patties are better than before. Great job, Randy?

After a little too much traffic for my liking, a couple of accidents, and seeing GIP (construction company) signs widening roads everywhere in Ontario, I finally reached the camp. I surprised Perle with a visit, where the team had their last game at 7 p.m. Perle (my daughter) was surprised and happy 🧐 to see me, shocker 🤷‍♀️! The team played great. Who knew hockey was played all year round in Canada? :) They’re indoor rinks, for any of you who think we live in igloos…

We took off and hit a place called On the Docks Pub, right in the middle of Huntsville on the river. The place is super cute, three floors of wings, nachos, great tacos, and pub-style beer and wine. A great guitarist played that night, and the place was full of 30-something cottage-goers looking for a fun night out. A lot of hipster-style backwards hats, ice-cream-style hair, high socks, and Burks. It's a thing.

On the Docks Pub is a win, and it’s exactly what you're looking for, if you know what I mean. #huntsville

I woke up early, grabbed Perle, and headed back to the city.

I'm looking forward to some new restos opening, some old favourites that I'll be highlighting in the fall, and I've got a few resos in Paris and St. Tropez that I’ll touch on in the coming weeks.

Bisou 😍

TECH SPOTLIGHT

🚀 Bitcoin Breaks Records – Is This the Crypto Renaissance?

Hold onto your hardware wallets — Bitcoin just moonwalked past $123,000! 🚀 The world’s most famous cryptocurrency hit an all-time high this week, with traders and techies alike watching in awe as it danced its way past the $120K mark for the first time ever.

Why the surge? Well, it turns out the U.S. is finally warming up to crypto, with Congress set to debate key bills that could give the industry the regulatory clarity it’s been craving. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind the movement, dubbing himself the “crypto president.” (We’ll let you decide how that makes you feel. 😅)

Add to that a full-blown digital asset rally, a $3.81 trillion total market cap, and even some central banks reportedly eyeing Bitcoin as a long-term reserve asset — and it’s clear we’re not just dealing with meme coin mania anymore.

Oh, and July 14 has officially been dubbed “Crypto Week” in Washington. So, if your blockchain buddy seems extra smug at the office, now you know why.

Whether you're a crypto convert or just here for the popcorn, one thing's certain: the digital gold rush is back on, and this time, it’s got legislative backing. 💼📈

REAL ESTATE SPOTLIGHT - COTTAGE COUNTRY

Ok, so it's summer and it's time to talk Cottages in Canada. Yes, of course, now is a great time send in a low bid on a property in the city that has been sitting (which one hasn't) but here is a super nice cottage on one of the big 3 lakes in Muskoka. What I personally like about it the location. The idea of a cottage to me is some seclusion and this one is in a really quiet location on the big lakes. It's a bit of a drive through the trees to get there and tons of quiet around you. Take a peek.

100 WEEKS OF POSITIVE MESSAGES

Frankie did 100 days of positive messages 3 years ago. He wanted to center them around mental health and positivity. We will post them each week for 100 weeks.

#29

There are some rookies out there that like drums and even some crazies that go boneless 🤦‍♀️.

But for me it’s flats every single time.

Crispy salt and pepper dusted flats doused with soya sauce and a squeeze of lemon.

☝️it is the only way…

Agree or disagree 👀?

Today is Sunday but things come up on the weekends as well. If you are looking for a solution to one of your problems, I would speak to a disabled friend, a comedian or the laziest person you know. They will give you the most direct answer. The perfect guy with the perfect hair and no issues will never figure it out ;).

Have friends from all walks of life.

🧠A Weekly Dose of Psychology You Didn’t Know You Needed 🧠

Hi everyone! I’m Maya — I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and Psychology (basically, I can analyze both a crime scene and your overly complicated coffee order). I’m also an incoming Master of Arts candidate in Counselling Psychology, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how the human brain works — and why it sometimes does the exact opposite of what we want it to do.

It’s week three, and I’d like to talk about something we all grapple with — whether you’re giving a presentation, speaking up in a meeting, or trying to look like you didn’t just rehearse your “confident voice” in the bathroom mirror: confidence.

But we’re not going to do the whole “believe in yourself and the world will follow” thing. Let’s dig into something more unexpected.

🧠 Psych Fact #3: You’re probably coming across as more confident than you feel, even when you’re internally spiraling.

This is thanks to something psychologists call the illusion of transparency. This is a phenomenon where we vastly overestimate how much other people can detect our emotions, especially anxiety.

That sweaty-palmed, rapid-heartbeat, voice-shaking panic? To you, it feels like you're broadcasting every ounce of nervous energy in HD. But to everyone else? You probably just look like someone who’s thinking really hard about what to say next.

In fact, research shows that others typically can’t tell how anxious we are, and we’re often surprised to learn that we came across as composed, articulate, even… confident.

So why does this matter? Because that mismatch between how we feel and how we seem can actually help us. Knowing that our insecurity is more invisible than we think can ease the pressure and make us feel, ironically — a little more secure.

So next time you're sure your nerves are written all over your face, remember: your brain is just being dramatic. And honestly? You probably look way more put together than you think.

Until next time,
Maya 🧠✨

OTHER POSH THINGS

Paul Jouan, maroquinierIt's true! Gorgeous handbags have a way of finding me, and so it happened as I wandered along the charming summer open-air market on Boulevard Saint-Germain; my eye caught a small booth glowing quietly with vibrant colours, smooth texture, and gorgeous craft.

There, sat Paul Jouan, a French maroquinier—a master artisan of leather bags—patiently hand-stitching one of his beautiful creations.Paul founded his namesake brand in 2014, but his journey began long before. After formal training in traditional leatherwork in the Loire region, he honed his craft in the prestigious workshops of Chanel and Hermès, gaining rare insight into the meticulous world of French luxury. His designs reflect a deep respect for savoir-faire—that uniquely French blend of skill, soul, and precision. His handbags are understated and elegant, crafted exclusively from selected leathers sourced in France and Belgium, many of which are vegetable-tanned for a more sustainable, natural finish. The brand's motto is “Exclusive hand-sewing.”

From compact cross-body purses to generous top-handle bags, each piece is meticulously stitched by hand with care and precision. Clients can customise the colour combinations—from earthy classics to vibrant hues. My absolute favourite (or as the French say, "mon coup de coeur") was the Laura bag in red. When I picked her up to get a closer look, he told me that colour turns "framboise au soleil" (raspberry in the sun), and I just melted!

Who doesn't want a bag that colour?

Paul’s work is rooted in authentic French craftsmanship, with all production done between Brittany and the Vendée. His warm, cheerful presence perfectly mirrors the spirit of his creations—quietly luxurious, deeply personal, and made to last.

Catch him on Boulevard Saint-Germain until July 27, 2025, before he heads back to Brittany to continue his work online.

Amazing Women’s Euros

We both yelled so loud I’m sure our neighbours across the road heard us.

When captain Cristiana Girelli scored in the last minute of normal time to put Italia ahead 2-1 over Norway in their Women’s Euro 2025 quarterfinal on Wednesday afternoon, my daughter and I hit the roof.

It was her second goal of the night and the 61st of her international career.

A few minutes later the final whistle blew to end the match, and the emotions were a mix of giddy joy and exhausted relief. My daughter says, “I’m happy we won, but that was very stressful.”

The match was stressful because it was an exciting encounter between two relatively even teams who have very different styles of play. Both teams had several scoring chances, and Norway even missed a penalty kick.

Norway was more direct and trying to hit on the counterattack, Italia looked to be more creative and attempting to control the game through intelligent possession.

It’s part of the evolution of the women’s game that this was such a cagey affair that felt part sporting contest, part chess match.

The Azzure (Italia’s nickname) struck first early in the second half on a great run and shot-pass by winger Sofia Cantore that was finished off by Girelli.

Norway captain Ada Hegerberg, after missing the aforementioned penalty, tied up the game midway through the second half on a great run and tidy finish as she tucked away a great long pass. It was her 51st career international goal.

Italia moved on to the semi-finals for the first time since the 1990s and will take on the winner of Sweden-England (the match took place after our filing deadline) on Tuesday, July 22.

The other semi-final takes place on Wednesday, July 23 and features the winners of Spain-Switzerland and Germany-France.

Fantastic tournament

Switzerland are the Women’s Euro 2025 hosts and have welcomed their European neighbours with open arms.

Buoyed by some exciting matches, a lot of goals (a group state record of 89), strong team effort, and super skillful individuals, the spectacle has been fantastic.

Going into the quarterfinals, 22 of the 24 matches were sellouts and they set a group stage attendance record of 461,582.

Over 26,000 people watched the Italia-Norway match in person (it was mostly Italian supporters), while the rest of the tournament is expected to be sellouts as well.

With the women’s game getting more support than ever before and continuing to level-up the on-field performances, the upcoming World Cup and Olympic events could be the best ever in all aspects of the game.

But, before that, let’s see if the Azzure can beat the odds and keep up their winning ways.
