FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

Have you been to Brownes Bistro near St Clair and Yonge in Toronto?

I have a friend who said it was their childhood go-to, so we went a few times 10 - 15 years ago. Most recently this year, I've got another friend who just loves it, so let's just say I've had a few wines there recently.

This is a neighborhood joint and that neighborhood is Rosedale. It reminds me of many local French restaurants in Paris. It's got the white tablecloths, the mussels, and the rude waiters - just kidding the staff is so friendly. Like you're an old family member.

The menu is great and filled with all the comfort foods you're looking for. Eggs benedict, angel hair, and rigatoni pastas. Salmon, steaks, lamb, and even liver which I love and had each time I've been. Caesar's salads and of course... Creme brûlée which I almost always order if it's on the menu.

If you're in the area and you want some deliciously old school French Mediterranean dishes done just right, don't miss Brownes Bistro.

Oh ya! Want to know what restaurant I'm dying to try, apparently it opened this last Friday. Lunch Lady on Ossington. If you get there before me, please give me your take:) - have a great beginning of summer and have fun kiddos at your camps.

TECH SPOTLIGHT

🚗🤖 Tesla’s Robotaxis: Rolling Out... and Ruffling Feathers

What do you get when you cross cutting-edge autonomous tech with Texas highways? Apparently, a whole lot of whoopsies. Tesla’s much-anticipated robotaxis hit the streets of South Austin this week, offering rides to a lucky few invited customers. But before these futuristic whips could even finish a full tank (well, charge), they had already caught the watchful eye of federal safety regulators.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reached out to Tesla after a flurry of online videos showed these self-driving sedans doing everything from speeding to swerving into the wrong lane — not exactly the smooth debut Musk & Co. may have envisioned.

To be fair, Tesla has a human “safety monitor” riding shotgun, presumably to grab the wheel if things get too Fast & Furious. But that didn’t stop one vehicle from suddenly slamming the brakes twice — for no clear reason — when approaching parked police cars. (Robotaxi or aspiring vigilante? You decide.)

While this rollout is still in its baby steps, it’s clear the robotaxis are not just navigating roads — they’re navigating regulatory scrutiny. NHTSA emphasized that manufacturers must meet rigorous safety standards and that, yes, even robots need to follow the rules of the road.

So for now, if you're hailing a Tesla robotaxi in Austin, buckle up — it might be a bumpy (and slightly too-fast) ride into the future.

George is the king of galas so this little tourney is bound to have some tricks up its sleeve. Now, attached here are a few links to behind the scenes photos of his last few galas in Toronto. Check them out and enjoy 😉.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Noisome

What It Means

Noisome is a formal and literary word used to describe things that are very unpleasant or disgusting; it is used especially to describe offensive smells. Noisome can also mean “highly obnoxious or objectionable” as in “we were put off by their noisome habits.”

FRANKIE’S SONG OF THE WEEK

This song is pushing it but it's my favourite Wu Tang song by far. I also love Cream, but this one is tops for me.  I think they play at Scotiabank mid-July BTW :)

100 WEEKS OF POSITIVE MESSAGES

Frankie did 100 days of positive messages 3 years ago. He wanted to center them around mental health and positivity. We will post them each week for 100 weeks.

#26

Good morning

As an immigrant you know what it feels like to be welcomed somewhere and you also know the opposite feeling.

I came to Canada as a white male with no language and it was not easy, but I got lucky making great friends.

I cannot even imagine how hard it would be to come if I was also disabled and treated racistly, can you?

Think outside of your morning coffee and remember that we are the lucky ones.

Remember that in this country we spend our days worried about how we label different types of people so that they feel included while in other countries people are being killed for simply thinking some of those thoughts.

Welcome people into your homes, welcome people to your countries and welcome people into your lives.

Lead with empathy and diminish that silly little noise that is in all of our heads that tells us that our values, our properties and our ancestral beliefs are above someone else’s.

Believe in the power of kindness.

Many immigrants are so worried about the way they appear and will almost always feel like they don’t belong in “your” country.

Thank you from that immigrant kid that was made to feel he belonged.

You can make a big difference making an immigrant feel welcome and improving their mental health.

Have a fantastic day”

Fond Argos Memory Never Fades

One of my fondest live sporting memories took place at Exhibition Stadium at a Toronto Argonauts game.

I was only 11 years old, and we had tickets around mid-level in the stands and not far from the aisle closer to the north end zone than the 55-yard-line (excuse me not recalling the exact row and seats).

The Argos were taking on Hamilton in the season finale on a cool fall night by the lake. I remember we were all dressed pretty warm.

Behind us were a ton of high school and university football players dressed in their various school jerseys having a blast.

Late in the game, a blowout for the Argos, one of the Toronto receivers gets in for a touchdown and is so excited he comes over to our section and launches the ball into the crowd.

I’m watching the ball sail towards us and just when I think it’s going to land close in a person’s hands, I feel a rush of bodies fly past us in an attempt to snag the ball. When I write “fly,” it’s almost literal. I almost get smacked over by one guy who dove from three sections above us to catch the ball in the row in front of us.

The high school and college players were so pumped, they got right into the action and other bodies started flying towards the ball as if it was a live fumble.

That memory always makes me smile, and I share the story often. That was the last year of Exhibition Stadium as the next year the Argos and Blue Jays moved down the lake to the SkyDome (I refuse to call it anything but the SkyDome).

I thought of that story again when my buddy Ted mentioned bringing his kids to an Argos game at BMO Field, and saying how the entertainment value is solid, but it wasn’t very well attended – except by the CFL’s best fans supporting the Saskatchewan Roughriders (Green is the colour!).

Back when we were growing up, Exhibition Stadium was always packed and back then the Argos were a pretty big deal in the city. Then, came the Rocket Ismail, Doug Flutie, Pinball Clemons, and John Candy years at the SkyDome and that was usually pretty good for attendance.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case anymore. Unless it’s the playoffs or the Grey Cup, Argos games can get more road team fans than home fans at BMO Field.

I’m just as guilty of it as anyone else. I haven’t been since they left the SkyDome. But, after getting nostalgic about the good old days at the Mistake by the Lake, I think I’ll bring my family to a game soon.

It’s a good price and good value for the dollar, so why not. And I’ll be sure to share the story of the diving football players for the one hundredth time with my kids while we’re there.

And of course, yelling ARRRRRGGGGGOOOOSSS!

That’s it for me! Ciao for Now!
