FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

Chengdu street food Toronto.

Gord Sato, yep Gord Sato. That's how I'll start this post. Gord is the kind of guy that really should be writing about great restaurants, not me. He is an incredible writer, knows history, politics, and is probably the best guy to ask about the hole in the wall foodie spots in ANY big city around the world. He was also one of Canada’s best real estate lawyers and knows architects and really smart people. He’s way above my league when it comes to culture, so I'm always so pleased to sit and chat with him. Did I mention he really knows his whiskey? I had the pleasure of trying Chengdu this week with Gord.

So, I'll do this review but maybe, just maybe Gord will contribute to my NL one day on any topic and you will be impressed.

You head down to Chengdu (I met Gord, and he said, this is the same Chengdu as the one in Richmond and not Vancouver - ok gord🤦‍♀️, I’m not a real foodie like you (I just like great food).

Anyhow, if you like spicy dishes then you need to try this place. Gord needed a bowl of rice, so we go him one. We tried the beef spicy red sauce bowl soupie thing - amazing (they gave me a bib, and thank God for that, it was used on the first spoon). We had the clams. Wait right there!!! The best clams I've ever had. Yep, best clams ever. AND a great chicken noodle dish.

This is one of those places that needs to be talked about more often. It was awesome and thank you Gord, where are we trying next?

🚀 Real Estate, But Make It Cosmic: The Analemma Tower Dream

Just when you thought luxury high-rises in Dubai couldn’t go any higher—think again. A New York architecture firm has proposed the Analemma Tower, a mind-bending concept: a 32,000-meter tall skyscraper… suspended from a freaking asteroid.

Yes, you read that right. The tower would dangle from space, orbit the Earth in a graceful figure-eight, and return to the same point every 24 hours—ideal for those who love a consistent commute and a little 300mph breeze with their morning coffee.

Equipped with solar power, rainwater recycling, and even space burials (because why not?), the tower promises an extra 45 minutes of daylight and views you’ll never beat on Zillow. The only catch? We don’t have the materials—or the asteroid—just yet.

Until then, we’ll stick to Earth-bound apartments… but dream big, Dubai.

100 WEEKS OF POSITIVE MESSAGES

Frankie did 100 days of positive messages 3 years ago. He wanted to center them around mental health and positivity. We will post them each week for 100 weeks.

#21

This is probably a little better to be used during a workday and not the day with your family, but it can apply to both from time to time so here goes…

Are you one of those people like me who like to be emotional but feel they lead with their heart a little too often?

I heard a line once this year and I really liked it…

“It is not that I am heartless, I just choose to use my heart less.”

Do you like it?

It is not that I’ve decided to be mean in any way, I just feel like my emotions or heart led first instead of my brain.

I love being emotional, I love that side of me but from time to time you need to take your heart out of the equation and listen to your brain or your gut.

“I am not heartless, I use my heart less…”

Have a happy and snowy Saturday and if you have it in your heart, please donate at www.camh.ca

That one shot that keeps you golfing

Now that we’re closing in on June and, hopefully, a lot nicer weather than we saw in May, it’s time to dust off those golf clubs.

Though I do really love to enjoy a few holes with good company, I only really get about five or six rounds in a year. And sometimes it’s not even the full round depending on my schedule.

Back in the day when I was working at Grandview Inn Resort in Huntsville, prior to the tough but gorgeous Mark O’Meara course opening across the road, I would go out almost every day and play the nine-hole executive course on the property – often on my own but occasionally with others.

That’s where I grew to really appreciate how tough but addictive golf can be. Even at my best, I was never better than an average weekend duffer.

I could play a round and decide to stop keeping scored after three holes because I sliced all my woods and hooked all my irons. The three-putts wouldn’t help either.

It was enough to say, I’m done, I’m never playing this ****** game again.

Then, on the next hole, the drive sails down the middle of the fairway, followed by a chip and a putt for a par four birdie. And boom, it’s got you in love all over again and confident you’ll one day be pretty good at it.

During my time in the golf and resort industry, friends and colleagues of mine would gather and go play other courses, especially on men’s nights, and I realized this was a social activity not a sporting one for most of us.

That’s when I really started to recognize that this game is for everyone of all skill levels.

Over the years, I’ve played with local club pros and amateurs, scratch golfers and newbies, and everything in between. I love going out with my kids as much as possible, since they seem to just understand how to hit the ball right.

One thing I no longer do, unless it’s a skins game with something on the line, is keep score. I find worrying about how well I’m doing prevents me from focusing on striking the ball well.

Side note: for whatever reason, I’ll play my best individual golf as a part of a team, Ryder Cup style. It could be that I feel like if I screw up my partner(s) won’t.

In fact, one of my favourite memories golfing, was on a men’s night at Grandview on the nine-hole executive course.

My dad and I chose to go out for men’s night at the last minute. It turned out to be an incredible decision as on the third hole, a short par 3, my dad got his first (and still only) hole-in-one.

Since then, on his birthday, I annually post on socials the picture of him holding the ball over the hole from that legendary moment.

I can’t remember the rest of that round, I’m sure we played okay. But it was that one shot that we’ll never forget.

It’s always that one shot that keeps you coming back for more.
