FRANKIE’S FAVOURITE EATERIES

Pork bone soup anyone?

Ya I know, many of you have never had it most have probably tried bimbap. Yep, Korean food. This week I tried Damda on Bloor street with a couple friends. It was great.

The food was super well done and the portion sizes were good. We all got the soup which comes with a little bowl of rice that's purpleish in colour, likely cooked with some beans. The pork bone soup that I ordered comes with a not too spicy broth, some pork bones, some potatoes, and some other veggies. It's a little messy to get the pork off the bones, it doesn't bother me but other people want to get the pork that's already sliced soup.

The soups and main dishes always come with the sides that go along with all Korean meals; spicy cabbage, seaweed slaws, and other slightly bitter and fermented veggies - I like them all.

As a middle appie plate to share we had the sliced beef bimbap on a hot plate and we all picked off it - delish! If you're looking for some Korean food, hit Korean town in Toronto which lands between Bathurst and Christie along Bloor. There are tons of Korean restaurants and some other fun ones where you can have a great hot pot or even barbecue your own meats, which my kids really like.

Have a great day!

TECH SPOTLIGHT

A Truck That’s More Blank Canvas Than Robo-Car

In a world where EVs are starting to feel like rolling iPhones, along comes Slate Auto with a different vibe entirely — one that’s less "futuristic spaceship" and more "choose-your-own-adventure."

This new startup, backed by none other than Jeff Bezos, just revealed a no-frills electric pickup truck that’s basically the anti-Tesla. Manual windows, no central screen, and get this — it doesn’t even come painted. Instead, you wrap it like a present (or not, your call). It's kind of like getting a coloring book version of a vehicle and deciding how you want to fill it in.

What makes this truck stand out? It’s super customizable, but in a low-key, DIY way. You can literally transform it from a pickup into an SUV, all without needing to call in a mechanic. Want to swap out features later? There’s a whole “Slate U” planned for helping non-gearheads figure it out.

They’re pitching it as affordable (under $20K if all goes to plan), and a bit of a throwback in the best way — no high-tech overwhelm here. It’s got a frunk you can fill with ice, more than 100 accessories to tinker with, and yes, you can even name it yourself.

Will Slate Auto manage to shake up the EV scene with its minimalist, hands-on approach? Time will tell. But at least now we know there’s an EV out there that won’t try to be smarter than us — just a blank slate waiting for someone to make it their own.

35 Normal Avenue ~ $1,399,000

Last week I had a friend who really wants to moved to Nobleton, he kept saying Nobleton Nobleton Nobleton. So, I looked to see something a little more reasonable that the number he was looking at. Here is the best deal in Nobleton, in my opinion:

UPCOMING SPORTS EVENTS

CHRIS’ CORNER

Super Sports Movies

Not every sports movie is Oscar worthy – or even big screen worthy – but the best ones will give you a whole lot of the feels while inciting a few laughs as well.

Personally, I love a good sports movie, even if it’s based on a true story with the ending well known.

To that end, I’ve put together my Top 10 sports movies list with the criteria being that I can watch it multiple times and still enjoy the experience. Also, I didn’t include documentaries, only fictional stories or fiction based on real-life events.

If I did include documentaries, the list would be full of soccer docs (seriously, just start watching them on any streaming service you have, you’ll thank me later). But, there aren’t any fictional soccer flicks that I really love that much to be in the Top 10.

On a different note, there is this one movie that a lot of people love, but that I just kind of like, but not like-like, so it’s nowhere to be found. You’ll figure it out.

By the way, this is my personal list and that doesn’t make it right or wrong, so it’s your right to disagree as we all have our own tastes.

Honourable mentions (with top billing actors): The Replacements (Gene Hackman, Keanu Reeves); Dodgeball (Vince Vaughan, Ben Stiller); A League of Their Own (Geena Davis, Tom Hanks); Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler); Mean Machine (Vinnie Jones); Major League (Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes); The Longest Yard (2005 – Adam Sandler, Chris Rock); Blue Chips (Nick Nolte, Shaq, Penny Hardaway, other stars).

10. He Got Game. This is my favourite Spike Lee joint. It’s about a basketball prodigy and an intense recruitment process that includes a school offering to get his dad out of jail if he commits there. Not the film to watch if you’re looking for a light-hearted tale.

9. Tin Cup. Kevin Costner, Cheech Marin, and Renee Russo are a delightful team in this fun but dramatic golf movie.

8. Draft Day. Kevin Costner (yeah him again), the late Chadwick Boseman, Jennifer Garner, and an all-star supporting cast tell this fictional tale of the NFL draft using real team names and logos. It runs the gamut of human emotion.

7. Bull Durham. Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins, and Susan Sarandon make this movie a must-watch for the ages. I love this movie for its dialogue, story angles, real-life relatability, and fantastic characters brought to life by amazing actors. Seriously a must-see if you haven’t already, but it’s not for kids.

6. Space Jam. Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes, and a fantastic supporting cast with wonderful cameos make this live action/animation collaboration a must-watch for everyone of any age. I still watch it almost annually – it’s fun for the whole family.

5. Caddyshack. The ultimate golf movie and unmatched comedy never gets boring. The genius of Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray is on full display throughout. From weekend duffers to scratch golfers, this is a fan favourite for anyone with a set of clubs.

4. Moneyball. I think our friend Super Frankie would make this higher on his own list (hahaha). But Top 3 is still pretty darn good. The Hollywood version based of the real-life story of the Oakland Athletics, their GM Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) and fictional analyst Peter Brand – in real life Paul DePodesta – (played Jonah Hill), as they used analytics to build a successful MLB team on a budget – and revolutionized sports management in the process for all professional leagues.

3. Remember the Titans. This one legit gives me the feels every single time. Denzel Washington puts on another legendary performance, while the supporting cast pulls you into the heart and soul of every character. I literally tear up at this movie still – and I know what’s going to happen.

2. Coach Carter. Samuel L. Jackson is stupendous playing the Hollywood version of the real-life Coach Carter who taught inner city youth about basketball, respect, and how to be men. And not in that order. This is one of the most inspirational tales ever told and the movie – even with a few less than polished actors playing the youth – is tremendous.

1. White Men Can’t Jump. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, with Rosie Perez and xx xx as next level supporting cast members, create the ultimate buddy movie. You have basketball, you have laughter, you have gambling and love and redemption and everything you could possibly want in a movie. Number one in my heart for sure!

Thanks for reading! Ciao for Now!
