Hold onto your (steering) wheels — or maybe not! NHTSA has proposed a new framework that could let fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) without traditional controls like steering wheels or pedals hit the streets. Companies like Zoox, already testing its toaster-like AVs in San Francisco, and Tesla, eyeing robotaxi production by 2025, are racing to make this a reality.

The program, called AV STEP, emphasizes transparency, requiring AV companies to submit detailed safety data and crash reports. While some hail this as progress, others argue it’s too soon to relax federal safety standards. Love it or not, the roads of tomorrow are gearing up to look very different!
