MOVIE REVIEW

I had the pleasure of taking my daughter to see, “Wild Robot”; a 2024 animated movie directed by Chris Sanders, and distributed by Universal Pictures. The entire cast is fabulous, with standouts Pedro Pascal as the cheeky fox, Fink, and Lupita Nyong’o playing Roz, an innocent robot who finds herself in an animal infested forest with more questions than answers as to exactly why she is there in the first place.

To be fair, I was a little confused why a futuristic robot would be thrown quite literally into the wild to fend for herself. And I was even more perplexed when the animals are just as confused why this robot is there at all. There won’t be spoilers here; but just know the island doesn’t take kindly to strangers, and being a robot certainly doesn’t help in having a welcome mat rolled out.

We were seated in the D-Box section which takes you on a simulated ride with the movie as your seat rumbles, raises and turns as the action on the screen mimics what is going on right underneath your ass. A bonus was watching the flick with the Ultra VFX audio experience, which literally makes you feel like you’re in the jungle with Roz and her new animal companions.

But to say that the seats and sounds are what made this movie would be a disservice to a magnificent film. It may start off as a semi slow burn, but that’s only because both yourself and Roz are trying to figure out what’s going on. As we start to figure out the storyline, it makes for a wild ride with both laughs and tears along the way.

Questions will arise, and they often won’t be answered immediately. Why is she here? When and how will she leave? Will she follow her programmed commands or fight the power and try and make this life in the wild her own life?

Truly, it doesn’t matter about why she’s there and what she can or will do. What she really wants is what all humans, animals, and yes, even robots alike want. Unconditional love.

Brace yourself for a film that will have your children glued to the screen while they laugh with this quirky motley crew of characters. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself taking off your 3D glasses and having to wipe them down because you had salt in your eyes. Either way, “Wild Robot” is a treat for kids and adults alike, and I’m thinking this isn’t the last we will hear from Roz or her island company.

Salty popcorn victims! Aren’t we all? (Playing now at theatres everywhere).

A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because its trust is not on the branch but on its own wings.” - Charlie Wardle
